Unpack Strategically & Organize As You Go
/You’ve worked hard to plan, pack and successfully move homes. You have arrived at your new home filled with new possibilities, fresh open spaces and so many boxes to unpack. And now you embark on the task of putting all of your things away in your new space. While you may be super excited to get settled in, the maze of boxes can be overwhelming. It can be difficult to know where or maybe even how to start. The good news is you don’t have to, and really shouldn’t try to, do it all at once. Unpacking in a new home is a perfect opportunity to create the organized systems you’ve always dreamed of that will last for years to come.
First Day Essentials
If you packed your “First Night” Bag, now is it’s time to shine. And if you didn’t, that’s ok! You simply need to find the things you will need in the first 24 hours in your new home. Medications, phone chargers, a fresh outfit or pj’s, you get the picture right?
A few more first day tasks
Make everyone’s bed for a good night’s rest after a long day of moving
Unpack bathroom essentials like toilet paper and shampoo
If your day begins with a Cup of Joe, unpack and prepare your coffee pot before bed
Grab quick breakfast options and unpack your toaster and a couple of pans
Your goal is to be able to eat, sleep and relax on day one.
Organize Your Main Spaces
You are in the new house, now we make it feel like home. There are a few areas in our homes that we need to function well for the ease of our daily routines. Focusing on unpacking and organizing these main areas will allow you the time to create the organizing system you want. This is where organizing products and tools really come in handy and are worth the purchase!
Pantry ~ Utilize Lazy Susans and dish risers. The dish risers can be used for cans or supplements and give you twice the space. Use wire basket bins or acrylic bins to contain pasta, rice or snacks. Containment is key to keeping a clutter free pantry.
Bathroom ~ Acrylic, bamboo or mesh organizers are a must for drawers. Put all “like” items together. Think oral care, eyes and make-up. Same rule as the pantry, containment is key!
Closets ~ If you can have most of your hangers the same, that will help with the aesthetic. And again, do your best to put like items together and by color. It will feel very streamlined when you walk in the closet. If at all possible, keep everything up off the floor. Use shoe racks for your shoes or canvas hanging shoe bags on the back of the door. That’s a huge space saver!
Don’t forget to measure before making purchases to make sure what you love will actually fit. Label all of your bins, baskets and containers. This step is so important to maintaining your hard work. Everybody can easily find what they need and just as easily put it back where it goes.
Feels Like Home
Over the next month, work through the rest of your boxes. Now we are working on personalizing your new spaces, really making them your own. Add your family photos to the walls and shelves, unpack your favorite books and add your home decor. Take your time to feel the flow of the space and allow for adjustments.
We are also ready to tackle the garage storage, spare bedrooms, home office and any leftover kitchen unpacking. Organizing products will help with these areas as well, to both keep your belongings where they go and maximize your storage space. Installing shelving, using drawer organizers and bins will help keep everything tidy and prevent clutter from creeping in.
This stage is not going to be completed quickly. You want to take your time to set up systems with intention. Create spaces and routines for things like daily items (shoes, coats and bags), paperwork and tidying up. Set aside time each month for a check in for each room. This is the time to reset any systems that may have gotten off track and do a quick declutter. This is the key to maintaining a tidy, organized home.
Does your home need a little decluttering and organizing magic and you don’t have the time, energy or desire to do it yourself?
