Kids' Spaces Made FUNctional
/A kid’s space is supposed to be fun, chaotic, and a little messy, at least in the moment. The problems come when this chaos and mess lasts 24/7. And this isn’t only in their own room. It’s the living room, the bathroom, and just about anywhere else they can get their items, right? Well, I’m happy to say that you don’t have to live in toy clutter forever, and you can actually enjoy playtime with your kids and organization afterwards! Let’s dive in.
Do They Play with This?
Decluttering toys is a great way to reduce the amount of clutter they can cause. Take some time to go through your kid’s items and toys and decide when the last time they used this toy was. You can even work with them, letting them decide which toys they actually play with. Make keep, donate, and trash piles for the toys. For any that you are keeping, you can reduce the volume of these toys in their spaces and yours by rotating them out. Once a month, have a certain amount of toys out for your kid(s) to play with and store the rest away. Then the next month, bring another set of toys out, keeping playtime intriguing and organized!
Kids Zone
To have functional kids’ spaces, we have to decide where their space is going to be. Or at least make specific areas for their items to be in different rooms.
If you want one room to be a designated kids’ space, you can divide it into separate sections. For example, one where they can read, and another part of the room designed for imaginative play. This way, they can have a section for books and another for dolls, toy cars, and other items like these.
You can also do this throughout your home as well. For instance, making a place in the living room and bathroom for imaginative play, and then a place in their room for reading. Then, having designated sections in these rooms to store their items.
No matter how you set it up, zoning areas can be a great way to keep their items where they belong!
Storage
Storage is a great way to keep kids’ items in specific areas so you always know where they are, and they do too! One key factor is ensuring these storage solutions are kid-friendly. Try to use clear, labeled bins that are accessible to your kids by being their height and easy for them to use. This helps them to know where their items are, where they go when they’re done, and not have to get you to get their things for them. Out of the floor and still accessible!
Maintenance
To maintain these systems and organization, set up a routine with your kids to teach them where their items go and establish a pickup time every day. This will help them to keep items off the floor and in their designated homes. And eventually, they should fall into a routine of picking up after play to keep their spaces and their items organized and keep the hassle off of you! Make cleaning up the toys FUN!! Make that a game too…time it and start the 2-minute clock, or play their favorite song while they clean up! They will need to be finished by the time the song is over! Or sing a clean-up song! There are many fun ways to make clean up fun, and this teaches kids to be organized for their future. They will need to be organized for school and their personal lives, so start them off now! Kids’ items and toys can become a big problem in all rooms of your house before you know it. Decluttering their items can help make sure there aren’t unused things lying around. Having specific zones, either in a room or throughout the house, can help them know which items and toys go where. Pairing this with accessible storage for kids can help them take on the responsibility of organizing their things and keeping them that way through maintenance plans. Establishing these systems can help you get rid of the clutter that kids’ items can cause and organize the rest!
