Organizing the New Year

The end of the year can often be full of clutter whether it’s new things or old. Do you want to start the new year clutter free? A good place to start is focusing on decluttering after the holidays and implementing systems and tools to create an organized space, all year round!

Holiday Take Down

What goes up must come down! The holiday season can create clutter in many areas of our lives and home. This can become a mess before we know it. Here are ways to make the take down easier:

The Decor

  • Have a system for packing away your holiday decor. Use labeled bins with lids and sort by category. This can be boxes of like items or even specific storage for ornaments which each get their own cubby so they are safe in storage.

  • As you pack everything away, focus on making keep, discard, and donate piles for anything that’s broken or you don’t plan on using like ornaments or extra lights.

  • If storage space for your holiday bins is limited, consider adding a sturdy shelf in your garage or attic. Storing vertically will maximize your space.

The Gifts

Gifts are another thing that can pile up after the holidays so it’s important to sort through them! Find a new home for the gifts you’ve received but remember to put them away with organization. When finding these new homes, make sure to apply organizing tools like a netting for new stuffed animals or cubbies for new toys to get them out of floor space for example. This stops the clutter before it even starts!

Setting Goals

The New Year often brings with it thoughts and ideas of improvements you want and need for your home and life. Organizing your pantry or closet may be on your to do list. Setting goals is a great way to make those changes happen. The key to success is writing down an action plan to go with those goals. This give you focus and and helps you make real progress toward getting what you want done. Be specfic with your goals. Break big tasks down into smaller steps you can actually take to achieve them. Include realistic deadlines to help keep the momentum going.

Tools for Organization

One of the best ways to maintain organization and help your organizing goals come to life is the use of organization tools.

Here are some ideas:

  • For bathrooms, focus on drawer dividers, countertop organizers, labeled bins under the sink, and wall-mounted hooks.

  • For pantries, use can risers, clear labeled bins, turntables, and door organizers.

  • For the living room, decorative baskets, storage ottomans, or mounted shelves.

  • For closets, look for vertical storage, shoe racks, vertical hangers, and bins that can go in the top of the closet.

While it’s important to focus on holiday cleanup, organizing what’s to come is just as important! By following these types of goals, establishing organizing routines, and implementing organization tools, you’ll be on the road to an organized, peaceful New Year!
