Strategies for Pre-Downsizing

strategies for pre-downsizing

There are many life stages that make living in a smaller space, the best plan. But, when you think of downsizing, it may seem very overwhelming. Planning for this process can reduce this overwhelm by helping to create more peace of mind and getting things orderly before having to start. Let’s look at 5 things to do before starting the downsizing process!

What Are Your Goals?

With many things changing during this time, it’s a good idea to get clear on what exactly your goals are for downsizing and your new space. Here are some key questions:

  • What is the reason for downsizing?

    • Getting clear on the why behind your downsizing can help you decide what your space will be like for you. Ex: if you’re downsizing for less maintenance or a more easily manageable space.

  • What will my future home needs look like?

    • Depending on what stage of life you’re in, this will look different for everyone. Ex: Will I need certain accessibility features for the home?

  • What items will I need to bring with me, no exceptions?

    • What items are coming with you, no matter what? This should focus on everyday use items first, and go from there to prioritize bringing items you use and leave the clutter behind.

  • How will I manage organization in my new space?

    • When setting up your new space, what organization systems can you include to maintain a calm and clear space in your new environment?

Making a Plan

Now that you’re clear on your goals, it’s time to set up your detailed plan for the downsizing process. Set time-based goals for decluttering and packing up all of your belongings. Make the list room-by-room, focusing on pacing yourself and working in one area at a time. After you have the big goals, break them down into smaller steps. For example, if this were for a bedroom, make a list breaking it down into steps like clearing out the closet, with the clothes first, then working on the items on shelves or bedside tables, then bedding and curtains, and then breaking down furniture.

Mapping it Out

Considering your goals and your plan, it’s time to map out the size and build of your new home. This is very important to decide what you’re realistically going to be able to bring with you in this transition. It gives you an idea of what can be decluttered and given away in the move, to ensure an easier setup in the new place. Look at the floor plan to think about where furniture and storage items can go!

Tackling Sentimental Items

While there are sentimental items you’ll be able to map into your new home, there may be things that you’ll have to leave behind. While this is a difficult decision, let’s focus on ways that we can capture these items without bringing them physically. Share stories with your loved ones about the items and why they mean so much to you. Then, take photos to keep memories of the item, without having them take up physical space. Practice empathy during this time, whether it’s to yourself or for your loved one. Divide and Conquer

Involve family members in the plan, packing, and the move to make a smooth transition. For packing, delegate certain rooms or items to certain people. Keep the same people on these areas and items when setting up the new home as well. Having family members help with the tasks of downsizing can create a calmer, easier time for everyone.
