Back to school can be very stressful, with fast-paced routines and all of the schedules to keep up with. Having an organized home can make back to school easier by creating a home that supports that lifestyle keeping up with you and your family’s needs. Through systems and strategies, you can create a home that stays organized and doesn’t cause you stress. Let’s dive into these systems and strategies that make back to school organized and stress-free!

Drop Zone

I’m sure you’ve experienced the evenings where you trip over shoes, coats, backpacks, and anything else your kids may have left behind as they got back from school. It adds to the mental load you’re already carrying in your own daily routine. Drop zones make that go away by allowing an easy place for your kids to drop their items in an organized way. Incorporate a drop zone by adding coat hooks, shoe racks, umbrella holders, and caddies. Having two separate shoe racks or different levels to one shoe rack to keep the inside and outside shoes separate makes them easy to find as everyone goes in and out. A drop zone helps create more calm and time to relax in the evenings and a calmer start in the morning too!

Busy Mornings

When school is back in session the mornings are bustling with getting ready, grabbing breakfast, and searching for everything they need to take out the door. Here are ways you can plan for these mornings to make them calm and organized:

  • Music: Put on a great song that everyone loves to sing along to. Music first thing in the morning makes everyone in a good mood!

  • Menu: Cut up fruit to go, organic granola bars, overnight oats with berries.  They can leave the trash in the car!

  • Evening Tidy: Take 5-10 minutes in the evenings to reset your home so that items are where they belong. No more searching for what you need in the morning leading to stress.

  • What To Wear: Decide what you and your kids (if they need help) are going to wear the next day and put it in a place to grab in the morning. This stops the paralyzing decision fatigue from hitting in the morning.

Planning ahead using these strategies can take away the overwhelming chaos on those busy back to school mornings.

Rest and Reset

This strategy may be the most important of all. It’s to rest and reset. Yes, that’s it. You and your kids need time for a calm atmosphere that allows for recuperation from the day. School and work can be draining, and in our fast-paced society, a lot of things are overwhelming. Take 15-30 minutes every evening to rest and reset with your family. This can look like reading together or reading to your kids if they haven’t learned to read yet. It can be sitting outside and experiencing the nature around you. Remember, you can rest even if you feel like there’s everything to do or that you haven’t earned it. You don’t need to earn rest!
