Strategies for Streamlining a Functional Home
/Do you feel like you can easily navigate through your home? Easy passageways where there’s nothing in your way and your routine isn’t interrupted by having to move or walk around things in your way? A lot of times our homes aren’t always set up in a way that helps us easily navigate around. Whether that be walking through or needing to access things in our kitchen. This can greatly impact your stress. But streamlining areas for what they’re designed for can create a functional environment where you and your guests feel comfortable, especially for the upcoming holidays. Let’s dive into the strategies!
Walking with Ease
Passageways and areas where a lot of traffic comes through are very important for the feel and navigation of your home. To make sure they are streamlined and organized, look for anything that is in the way. Whether it be a chair in the living room that makes you have to squeeze by or the kitchen table making it hard to get outside to the balcony. Think of ways these furniture pieces can be moved to help passageways be clear. Aim to have a clear walking path, especially from the entrance to the living room and kitchen! Also, keep items like shoes out of these areas on a daily basis.
Entryway
Entryways are very important when it comes to a functional home. Create a dropzone in your entryway, where you can easily put things down as you come home and grab what you need on your way out. Consider including a table where you can put small items, a shoe rack, and coat/bag hooks. Including vertical storage here like the racks and hooks keeps coats and bags from being tossed on the floor or on the back of chairs!
Clear Surfaces
Having surfaces clear can really help with visual clutter and the overall function of your home. The biggest place that this happens is in the kitchen. Aim to keep appliances like toasters and blenders in a cabinet that can be easily accessed. Then, try and keep any items you can off of the counters. This helps things not be spilt, broken, and helps overall navigation of the kitchen, especially when rushing. And same goes for the living room! Keep blankets in baskets, TV remotes on the TV stand or in a drawer, and stray items stored and not on the coffee table.
Daily Reset
Once these strategies are implemented, it’s time to make sure they stay like that. Take 5-10 minutes a day to put everything back where it belongs. Shoes in the entryway rack, blankets in their baskets, and no items in the passageways. Keeping everything streamlined and functional!
Now, you walk into your home and feel refreshed, easily walking where you need without tripping on anything or having to squeeze through. Clutter doesn’t impact your ability to sit on the couch or make dinner. This is super helpful, especially with the holidays approaching quickly, ensuring you and your family/friends feel welcome and comfortable throughout your home!
