3 Strategies to Tackle Chronic Disorganization
/Does your home feel calm and have a peaceful environment? Or, does it feel chaotic, full of items with nowhere to go, impacting the functionality of your space, your stress, and your ability to have an inviting home? No matter how many times you pick up, it ends up feeling cluttered in no time. You don’t have the time to spend organizing all of the different items you need to. If you’re tired of the cluttered and chaotic environment in your home, you’re in luck because we have three strategies to help you tackle the chronic disorganization!
Mindset Shift
When it comes to chronic disorganization, oftentimes you can experience negative thought loops, which cause more harm than good. It may be about blame or shame, but no matter what the thoughts are, they don’t help you get the organization and peace you want in your home. So, let’s shift them! If you catch yourself thinking something like “I really can’t believe I let the clutter build up like this.”, reframe it to “Clutter has built up, and that’s life! Let’s plan a time to start tackling this, one step at a time.” Just this simple change of thought can impact not only the organization in your home, but also your well-being! Genuinely remember, life is a journey filled with “things” that fill us emotionally, and it’s completely normal for them to eventually pile up. That’s why I’m here to help with strategies, tips, and hands-on support if needed!
Small Changes and Taking It Slow
Sometimes all we need are small steps to make big moves in our lives. So here are some ideas to help you start small:
Timers: Using timers while you declutter or pick up can be very helpful. Set a timer for 5 minutes, and pick up shoes that are on the floor or dishes left out from breakfast. After the timer goes off, take a break!
Trash: Instead of trying to figure out what you want to keep, donate, or sell, just focus on trash first. Go through common areas and get rid of anything that’s broken, needs to be thrown out, or doesn’t serve a purpose anymore.
Sections: Work in one section at a time. If you start in the kitchen, break it down even more. One kitchen drawer, one pantry shelf, or the countertops. Focus on one area, once it’s decluttered and organized the way you want it to be, then you can move on to another small section. Continue until before you know it, your kitchen looks and feels so much better!
One In, One Out: To help prevent clutter from building up in your home, focus on the one in, one out rule. For every item you bring in, find an item you don’t use anymore to get rid of.
Making It Realistic
One of the best strategies to keep chronic disorganization at bay is to create organization that is realistic and can be turned into habits. For instance, do you have things like shoes and coats that need a home and would be easy to find by the door? Then having a drop zone would benefit you and be realistic for your life. Do ingredients and food items get lost in the pantry and fridge, causing you to buy more than you need? Bins, turntables, and shelves would be realistic and take this strain away. You wouldn’t want a storage ottoman that is never used. Then, it’s just taking up space and causing a cluttered feel. For any organization tools or systems you are implementing, make sure it fits your lifestyle, and makes your life easier.
These strategies can help you to begin tackling the chronic disorganization and implement systems that genuinely work for YOU! Always remember to give yourself space for understanding and to promote growth to create the organization that you want to see in your home. Take small steps and practice some of these small changes to implement organization and make it realistic to you and your needs in your home.
